Valentines Day

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am fairly anti-Valentines Day. Apart from the chocolate the whole day seems very much pointless to me. Thats not because I am cynical or against love in anyway,  in fact its quite the opposite. Love is beautiful, something that I love so much about love is how it is totally unique in every situation. You can't love someone the same way you love another, every relationship (romantic, friendships, family alike) all have their own love story that they are slowly writing together. There are no two identical loves. This is why I dislike Valentines Day. It commercializes and tries to put something in a box that cannot be contained. We take something so beautiful and unique and inspirational and minimize it down to a hallmark card and a creepy teddy bear. Im choosing to celebrate the Valentines Day this year, for what might be the first time. But I am not choosing to partake in some commercialized consumer stunt, however I am going to make a deep effort to love everyone around me in the way God shows us. I thought I would share some verses with you in case you felt called to leave your chalky heart candies behind and celebrate how God would want.

Luke 6:35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Try loving people who are not exceptionally nice to you today. Give them all that you can offer and know that it is not for them, or for yourself but for the Lord.  Buy that annoying girl at work a coffee, share something you love with someone, bring your neighbor who is always arguing with you some warm cocoa, its all in the little things. And as always, expect nothing in return- because it is not humans who can reward us but the Lord.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5  Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Wipe the slate clean with someone you have been arguing with. Keeping no records of wrongs is a very difficult thing to do, but have that  be your Valentines Day gift to yourself. It takes intentional forgiveness to truly clear the slate but it can be done. Take deep breaths and try to not be easily angered. Attempt in all interactions you have to be patient, kind, honoring, calm, and open. This is how God wants us to interact, this is how God wants us to love.

1 Peter 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

Remember that we are all sinners. Nobody is better or worse in God's eyes. Try to cast judgment aside and love each other the way that God loves us. His love is unconditional because we are all sinners. If the Lord's love was conditional we would all have lost it already. Do not rush to judge others and get caught in sin but let the blanket of love overcome. Love is what brings us together.

1 John 4:19 We love because He first loved us.

Remember we have this beautiful example of how to love from the Lord. We love because, the Lord loved us first. Show love to each other to bring glory to the one who will always love you, has always loved you and is currently loving you despite all you do.

With these ideas in mind, I hope that you have a truly blessed Valentines Day. 💛
